Employ a Future Leader

If your school fulfils our criteria and you would like to work with Future Leaders, there are a number of ways in which you could be involved:

Offer a residency year

Employ a Future Leader

Employ a Future Leader as Principal Designate for a Free School

Offer a residency year

Drive lasting change and achievement in challenging schools. Stamp out educational disadvantage.

Most new Future Leaders will resign their posts and spend year one of the programme working as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of a residency school.  Future Leaders is looking for schools situated in one of our five operating regions (London, North West, North East, Midlands, Yorkshire & the Humber, South Coast) who would like to offer a residency placement.

As well as benefitting from the work of a Future Leader, residency schools also have a responsibility to contribute towards her/his development. To that effect all residency schools must commit to meeting the following key expectations:

Challenging role at SLT level

  • Offer a residency experience at a level equivalent to that of a Deputy Head at the school
  • Give the participant a title that reflects her/his position (our preferred job title is Associate Deputy Head/Vice Principal)
  • Allocate the participant with a teaching timetable of no more than a third or in line with other senior leaders

Residency experiences

  • Provide the participant with opportunities to experience wider aspects of senior leadership beyond their day-to-day duties.  A list of suggested residency experiences will be provided
  • For residency schools supporting internal participants, you will also have to release your Future Leader from school in order that they can do a five day placement at another school within our network during their residency year

Mentoring

  • The Head should commit to holding regular one-to-one meetings with the participant to give feedback and enable the participant to gain an insight into the strategic decision making process in the school.  The Head should also feedback on the participant’s performance twice in their Residency Year through an interview with the participant’s Leadership Development Adviser
  • Nominate an in-school mentor, usually a Deputy Head/Vice Principal, to work with the participant on a day-to-day basis

Future Leaders are matched to their residency school following a lesson observation and interview, and usually come with a 25% salary subsidy. Please note that the supply of residency participants is limited and we cannot guarantee a placement.

If you are interested in offering a residency year and meet our criteria for being a challenging school, please contact our schools team:

Employ a Future Leader

If you have a vacancy on your senior leadership team or are looking to appoint a Headteacher at any point in the year, we have a pool of talented Future Leaders who you may like to employ.  Some will be in their residency year while others will be further on in the programme in Deputy or Assistant Headteacher posts.

After a rigorous selection process, they have received highly specialised training, coaching and mentoring and are equipped with the strategies, skills and vision necessary to make a lasting impact in your school as a senior leader.  They are also part of a growing national network, from which your school could benefit.

Please note that we do not charge any fees for helping to place our participants in post-residency year posts.

Do you want a Future Leader to lead your Free School?

Many Free Schools identify with the Future Leaders core values because they, like us, are aiming to address educational disadvantage in their communities and to ensure that every child is given the chance to succeed.

Effective, inspirational school leadership can eradicate educational disadvantage and is the most determinative factor on pupil outcomes over time. We are working with the organisers of proposed Free Schools that fit with our core values, to find committed, outstanding Principals Designate from within our network of Future Leaders participants. We are confident that Future Leaders have the capacity to lead like-minded school groups in setting up their Free Schools and the passion to make their schools a success for every pupil.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of having a Future Leader as your Principal Designate or member of your senior leadership team, please contact our schools team to discuss your school’s eligibility:
