Believe, Lead and Achieve!

  • Future Leader James Tomlinson is Assistant Principal at St Alban's Academy. Since joining the school in 2010, he was faced with the task of raising attainment of students that have the weakest attainment profile upon entry of all of Birmingham's 75 secondary schools.
  • 50% of students achieved 5+A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths) in 2012, a 19% point increase from 2009.
  • In 2011 the school was rated outstanding by Ofsted and was most recently awarded the SSAT Outstanding progress award, meaning that St Alban's Academy students achieving 5+A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths) made more progress from KS2 to KS4 than students in any other school in the country.

Aspirational, Exceptional, Outstanding!

  • Future Leader Dominique Gobbi was appointed Associate Headteacher of Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College (BTH) in January 2013, after having established a number of initiatives to create a high-performing school culture.
  • BTH has seen a shift in staff mentality to work at raising the attainment of those pupils, who are not reaching the 5 A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths), rather than just celebrating the success.
  • In 2012 80% of pupils attained 5 A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths) and BTH is now focused on acheiving 85% in and 100% of pupils attaining 5 or more (not inc Eng and Maths) in 2013.

Going for Gold

  • Future Leader Catherine Collier is Deputy Head at St Paul's Catholic High School in Manchester and over the last year she has implemented a new programme to raise expectations of Year 9 pupils.
  • Inspired by London 2012, Catherine developed the Going for Gold scheme to engage pupils and to raise their aspirations for the years ahead.
  • The high standards and challenges set out in the Going for Gold programme have enabled all pupils to raise their attainment, with the 2012 results indicating that St Paul's was the most improved school in Manchester, with 59% of pupils achieving 5A*-C at GCSE.

Dream it, Believe it, Achieve it!

  • Future Leader Peter Knight was appointed Associate Principal of Oasis Mayfield in September 2010. He was tasked with running the upper school and overcoming difficulties caused by the merger of two former schools and running a school located across a split site.
  • He used a range of initiatives to challenge the low expectations of students and improve teaching standards.
  • After only a year at the school, 48% of students achieved 5A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths), an improvement of 19% on the previous year. In March 2012, Ofsted inspected the school and judged it to be "improving at a rapid rate" and was no longer subject to a 'notice to improve'.

From Faculty Leader to Future Leader

  • In his first year of the programme, Future Leader Russell Bond was issued with the task of reducing the school deficit at Perry Beeches - The Academy.
  • Russell reduced the deficit by giving staff additional financial training, ensuring parents claimed for free school meals and reducing school expenditure. By the end of the first year of a five year plan they paid more than 50% of the deficit back to the LA.
  • To help raise expectations, Russell organised a trip overseas for Year 9 to visit Normandy.  The trip was so successful it will now be an annual event.

Making an impact

  •  By the end of 2009/10, a year after Future Leader Glen Denham was appointed Principal of Oasis Academy Shirley Park, 46% Year 11 students achieved 5A* - C grades including English and maths - an astonishing increase from the 24% achieved in the predecessor school.
  • Within 1 year, Oasis Academy Shirley Park was designated as the seventh fastest improving Academy in the country.

Raising the Bar in West London

  • The headteacher of Fulham Cross acknowledges that Future Leader Peter Haylock's work on assessment and intervention in the past year has played a significant part in achieving the ‘outstanding’ category from Ofsted.
  • 2010 saw Fulham Cross achieve its finest set of results in the history of the school - 92% of students achieved 5 A* – C grades overall (an 8% increase from 2009) and the school was in the top 2% of schools in England with regard to their contextual value added score.
  • Peter was appointed Federation Vice Principal/Head of School of Henry Compton Secondary School, which is
    part of the Fulham College Federation in September 2011.

An Inspirational Leader

  • Future Leader David Millar took a tough stance to inadequate teaching at Oasis Academy Coulsdon and his approach worked - he raised teaching standards in the school in just under a year.
  • Coulsdon has reduced exclusions by 80% – in 1 year, despite having previously been one of the highest excluding secondary schools in Croydon.
  • There has been a 9% increase in A*-Cs (including English and maths), and a 12% in overall A*-Cs.

Journey to Headship

  • Exam results alone have improved with the school achieving 49% A-C including English and maths in 2009 and 56% in 2010, plus a value added score of 1017, putting it into the top quartile of schools nationally.
  • Perhaps even more profound than exam scores, is the change in the ethos of the school, brought about by Future Leader Jane Keeley and her team’s insistence on putting learning at the heart of everything in the school.

Going beyond Outstanding

  • Under Future Leader James Haseldine’s leadership, results have increased from 31% 5A*-C to 50% 5A*-C including English and maths. Results for 2011 are on target to increase to 65% 5A*-C including English and maths.
  • Stretford High school was the most improved school in the North West 2008-2010 (SSAT).
