TES - The toughest of the tough
TES journalist William Stewart visited exemplary schools in Philadelphia last October, accompanying Future Leaders and headteachers as part of the annual study tour.
TES reports that as Future Leaders train to become headteachers of some of the UK's most deprived schools, they visit some of Philadelphia’s toughest schools, where children apply to Charter schools, not for academic reasons but because of safety. The Charter schools they visit also have different approaches; some have a strict discipline policy and others follow the philosophy of educationalist Paulo Freire. Future Leaders also reflect on how the teaching practices they saw in Philadelphia could be implemented in UK schools.
