Do you want to lead the future in a challenging urban school? If you share the following beliefs then Future Leaders could be the programme for you:

All children can succeed, regardless of background

The most challenging schools need the best leadership

You have the potential, with the right training and support, to be a senior leader within 12 months and a headteacher within four years

Future Leaders’ aim is to develop senior leaders for challenging urban schools by recruiting, developing and supporting existing or former teachers with leadership potential. Our rigorous selection process and intensive two year training course means that this is not a programme for the faint-hearted. Through tailored in-school and offsite experiences, and outstanding mentoring, coaching and training, you will develop the skills and vision to make a lasting difference to the lives of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. If selected, we expect you to become a senior leader after 12 months, and a headteacher within four years.

Participants will receive intensive foundations training in the summer, before a year-long residency as part of the senior leadership team at a carefully selected urban school under the apprenticeship of an outstanding headteacher and the training and support of a dedicated coach. You will develop and complete a series of projects that will benefit the development of the school and its pupils, and will help you learn more about all aspects of senior leadership. You will be teaching a reduced timetable, so you will have time to reflect on your leadership journey.

We will support you with cutting-edge training and coaching from the education and business world that is tailored specifically to urban environments and leads to NPQH. You will see and share best practice through visits to exemplary urban schools in the UK and US, along with a member of your school’s leadership team.

The following year, we will support you to take up a post as a senior leader in a challenging urban school. During this time you will again benefit from cutting-edge training from the education and business sectors and will receive regular coaching to help you succeed. We hope that you will commit to staying at your posting school for at least two further years following your initial posting year. You should also be working towards gaining your first headship position in an urban school within four years of starting the programme.

We aim to make it easy for you to move to the programme. During the first training year, we aim to match your current salary (3). In your second year, you should expect to receive a higher salary based on the SLT role that you will aim to gain.

You can choose to make a difference to a wider group of pupils by making a fresh start in a new school. Or, if your school is part of our network, you could be seconded onto the programme by your current school.

Your cohort will form a special network of dynamic, supportive leaders with a strong sense of mission. You will learn a lot about yourself and will be challenged in what you thought could be possible in your own learning and in others’.

Participants who join this programme become part of a lifelong network of peers, all committed to making a difference in challenging urban schools, shaping the future leaders of this country and giving back to the programme in order to support our shared mission of reaching every child.
