Umbar’s
journey:
I have been in the teaching profession for six years and I have
previously held two middle leader positions. I’ve worked in
two contrasting London schools; a special measures school and a
rapidly improving school that achieved the most value added results
at Key Stages 3 & 4.
I applied to Future Leaders because I believe in the five core values
and mission of this initiative. I was ready to apply for Senior
Management but wanted to be part of a programme that was pupil-centred
and dealt realistically with the challenges of being a leader in
an urban environment. The innovative and creative interview process
which allowed the Future Leaders team to gain a holistic picture
of each participant sealed it for me. I knew that this was going
to be something special.
My cohort have an incredible team working with us and I am looking
forward to the reflection, thought, debate and discussion while
we shape our pedagogy and build our cultural blueprint as future
leaders.
Umbar has since gained her first senior leadership
posting as the Director of the Islington Consortium - working across
three schools to lead and develop the Consortium with a strategic
overview of curriculum offer and uptake, pupil progession and pathways,
the academic and social development of students and the educational
and financial viability of the Consortium. |

Truda’s journey:
I have been a Headteacher for 10 years in two schools, both of which
have been very challenging. I came to Highbury Grove in January
2001 and have worked relentlessly on improving achievement and attainment.
The key to increasing success in schools is the quality of the staff
in the school. Our school has an extensive staff development and
Future Leaders looked like an exciting opportunity to enhance our
training programme for aspiring senior managers as well as build
additional capacity in the senior team.
Umbar can expect an exciting, demanding, exhausting, stimulating
and rewarding year with us. We’ll assess and analyse her strengths,
areas for development, gaps and aspirations together, and she’ll
have the opportunity to experience activities such as shadowing,
observation, simulations and being coached through real-life situations.
Future Leaders will help to re-focus thinking in relation to how
adults learn and develop their knowledge, understanding, skills
and expertise. It will give confidence to young leaders and develop
this pool of talent that is in every school so that when I and other
fellow heads of my generation retire, we really can retire and do
not have to come back out because the school down the road has failed
to recruit a head despite advertising three times!
