Spokey Wheeler, Headteacher and Kate Elliott, Future Leaders Participant - Burlington Danes Academy

Kate’s journey:

I’m an intrepid explorer of learning! I started life as a teacher of English and Drama and meandered into leadership in Further Education, becoming a qualified coach to support co-workers and students. Having set up my own coaching company, I’m returning to school where I feel most alive and purposeful.

I applied to Future Leaders to fulfill my dreams and to help others fulfill theirs. I am passionate about learning and believe that everyone, irrespective of race, class or age, has the right to the highest quality experience of learning which meets their needs and which is tremendous fun. I believe that Future Leaders will open incredible doors for all participants to live their values and make a real difference to all learners in challenging urban schools.

So far, I’ve learnt that dreams are more powerful than strategic plans and that passion, belief and a shared journey can change lives. I have learnt that influence comes from winning hearts and minds and that profound and sustainable change is about connecting people to their own values and mission in life. I have learnt the power of stories and that leadership is about becoming one’s best self.
  Spokey’s journey:

I have taught in England, Singapore and Germany I joined the initial Consultant Leader (CL) team with London Challenge through London Leadership Centre and since then have worked alongside other leaders in Key to Success schools. I joined Burlington Danes, an SICC school in White City, West London in Easter 2005. We came out of Special Measures in May 2006 and are currently being fast tracked to Academy status in September 2006.
I was lucky enough to be in on some of the early discussions and Future Leaders just seemed such a great idea. I believe that it is one of our most important jobs as heads to help develop the next generation of future leaders. Of course, what a great chance to have a high quality leader joining one's leadership team for a year!

Future Leaders could become the ultimate entry in the CV of a prospective leader anywhere in the country as part of their leadership journey. It should make being a leader in a complex urban school the career destination of the best leaders in our system and so promote a world class generation of urban leaders who transform the lives of urban children across the nation.
